Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder. She also experienced anxiety due to the word"association. Ford was first fascinated by acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that it was not the right venue for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth attempt she was eventually admitted. Her classmate were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in 1996.
